Told at 18, "You Will Not Survive": British Author, Now One of the World's Longest Cancer Survivors, Marks 51 Years by Sharing His Extraordinary Story

PR Newswire

SOUTH SHIELDS, England, Oct. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- At just 18 years old, John Walker Pattison was told something no young person should ever have to hear:

"You will not survive."

More than five decades later, Pattison is still here.

Now one of the world's longest-living cancer survivors, the British author, retired senior cancer nurse specialist has turned his 51-year journey into his award-winning memoir, Shadow of a Survivor — a story about resilience, family, identity, hope and the life that followed survival.

Pattison's story is remarkable not simply because he survived cancer, but because of what came after survival, as survivorship is only the beginning.

Eight years after his own unexpected recovery, his four-year-old daughter was diagnosed with terminal leukemia.

Once again, Pattison faced fear, uncertainty, and the possibility of losing someone he loved most, experiences that helped shape Shadow of a Survivor.

She survived, and went on to become an international swimmer, representing Team GB.

Pattison returned to the same hospital where his cancer had been diagnosed — not as a patient, but as a cancer nurse consultant. There, he cared for people facing the same uncertainty he once knew.

"People see the words 'cancer memoir' and assume they know what the book is about. But Shadow of a Survivor isn't only about cancer. It's about growing up, discovering myself, and discovering who I really am. Cancer is the thread running through the story, but Shadow of a Survivor is about life."

His life has been shaped by cancer but never defined by it.

Pattison's life has taken extraordinary turns.

During treatment, British space-rock pioneers Hawkwind's music provided solace during those dark days. Decades later, in 2007, he joined the band's backstage crew and later performed on stage with Hawkwind at Donnington Festival.

His search for meaning also took him to the American West. In 2018, he traveled to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where he spent time with members of the Lakota people and was humbled to be named an honorary member of the Tribal Council.

These experiences underpin the message of Shadow of a Survivor: survival is not simply about defeating an illness. It is about discovering what makes life worth living after diagnosis, trauma and fear.

Readers have praised the memoir's honesty, humanity and resilience. One five-star reviewer called it:

"A beautiful testament to courage and resilience that inspires us all."
